Development of a flame retardant injection material from PLA with high heat resistance and impact resistance for technical products.

Summary: In the joint project TechPLAstic, a flame-retardant PLA compound for injection molding applications will be developed, which shall be used as an alternative to conventional plastics such as ABS or PC. The project partners Evonik Industries AG, Fraunhofer UMSICHT, Institut für Kunststoffverarbeitung (IKV), as well as Gira Giersiepen GmbH & Co. KG, ICL Industrial Products, Nabaltec AG, Alfred Pracht Lichttechnik GmbH and FKuR Kunststoff GmbH will develop a marketable, flame-retardant PLA compound with high heat and impact resistance. The most practical development and rapid transfer of results to industry is ensured by the close cooperation of industrial companies and research institutes.
In this research project all relevant material-technical weaknesses of PLA are examined and will be optimized. The interacting effects, such as flame retardant and embrittlement are extensively researched and enhanced. The process technology of injection molding is also being put to the test. The application focus of this PLA compound initially lies on technical products of the electronics and construction sector.
