PLA as a sustainable alternative to fossil-based high-performance plastics
FKuR is collaborating with leading partners to develop a new PLA compound for demanding electrical and electronic applications—high-performance, process-reliable, and made from renewable raw materials.
Electrical and electronic applications place the highest demands on materials: high heat resistance, good dimensional stability, high toughness, and excellent flame retardancy must all be balanced—ideally while reducing the carbon footprint. As specialists in bioplastics and recycled materials, we are working on a new collaborative project to develop the next generation of bio-based engineering plastics for the electrical industry. The goal is a PLA compound that is ready for use in both material and process applications, combining high-level technical properties with a significantly improved sustainability profile.
In this research project, we are developing a PLA compound specifically designed for electrical and electronic applications. The focus is on increased heat resistance, improved mechanical performance, and high flame retardancy throughout the component’s entire service life. At the same time, we take a holistic approach to processing, design, and end-of-life options in line with the principles of the circular economy.
Typical objectives of the project include:
- Increased heat resistance compared to standard PLA
- Optimization of flame retardancy in accordance with relevant standards
- Good flow properties and a wide processing window for injection molding
- High scratch resistance combined with an attractive component appearance
As an industry partner, we contribute our expertise in material development, compounding, and application technology, and test the material under real-world conditions at plastics processing facilities.
The “HighTechPLA” project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space on its behalf and with its funding.
