Why isn’t recycling alone enough for a functioning circular economy?

Why Recycling Isn't Enough: A Podcast on the Circular Economy, PPWR, and Bio-based Plastics in Europe—Listen Now

Why Recycling Has Its Limits (Podcast)

Recycling is an important part of the circular economy, but it cannot solve the problem of resource scarcity on its own.

“Recycling is just an extension of linearity.”

A provocative statement—one that reframes the current debate on recycling, the circular economy, and sustainable materials in Europe. Our CEO, Patrick Zimmermann, speaks not out of cynicism, but with scientific precision. In the latest episode of the MedTech Sustainability by Design podcast with Lucas R. Pianegonda, he debunks common myths surrounding recycling and the circular economy.

Recycling and the Circular Economy in Europe: Limits, PPWR, and Bioplastics

In the podcast, Patrick explains why recycling alone does not create a true cycle, what truly distinguishes bioplastics, and how their properties differ fundamentally. Because: the perfect cycle does not exist in practice. With every recycling cycle, material quality and performance decline—until, in the end, often only energy recovery remains. Recycling merely extends the life cycle, but does not close the loop.
At the same time, the industry faces a paradox: In Europe, recycling capacities are being reduced, even though a material shortage looms. The reason is simple. New fossil-based material is still cheaper than recycled material. Without a clear regulatory framework, price is the deciding factor.

Patrick Zimmermann therefore calls for a change in thinking. Bio-based polymers should be treated on an equal footing with recycled materials in the PPWR Regulation from the very beginning, rather than only starting in a few years’ time, in 2028.
